Scoring/Judging

Scoring

Scoring is different for AKC events and ASFA events.  For AKC events the dogs are judged on a 50 pt. scale and include:

                                            Overall Ability- 10 points
                                            Follow- 10 points
                                            Speed- 10 points
                                            Agility- 10 points
                                            Endurance- 10 points

                                            Total- 50 points

For ASFA events the dogs are judged on a 100 pt. scale and include:

                                            Enthusiasm- 15 points
                                            Follow- 15 points
                                            Speed- 25 points
                                            Agility- 25 points
                                            Endurance- 20 points

                                            Total- 100 points

Judging

As you've seen, the hounds are judged on such things as: speed, agility, follow, endurance, enthusiasm and overall ability.  In order for the judges to tell them apart when they are running, the hounds wear either a bright yellow, pink or blue coursing blanket (jersey).  Of the three dogs running in each course, the judges give a numerical score reflecting how each hound placed.  Then, the dogs must be cross-course judged.  That means if there are two courses of three dogs run, the judges must rank the scores as though all six ran in the same course.

You can see that the only difference, other than the point spread, is that AKC grades for "Overall Ability" rather than "Enthusiasm" like ASFA does.  Normally there is only one judge that scores a run.  However, there are times when two judges are used.
